Submission responding to the UK’s latest update on its compliance with European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages

CAJ has provided comment on the UK’s official response to the 5th report on its adherence to the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages (ECRML).

Our submission is limited to commentary on the UK’s commitments in Northern Ireland  under the ECRML, namely those related to the promotion and protection of Irish and Ulster Scots. This includes looking at the fate of the draft legislation on language that was published alongside the New Decade, New Approach agreement, but has yet to be introduced or implemented.

The full submission, which was submitted to Committee of Experts of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages (COMEX), can be found here.

For further reading, please see our detailed analysis of the NDNA agreement, and our working paper on the implications of the UK’s NDNA commitment to recognise Ulster Scots as a national minority
