CAJ is delighted to announce that today it was today admitted to full membership of the FIDH (International Federation for Human Rights), the global network of some 180 groups.
This was an exception to the FIDH statute which provides for only one member per UN member state (Liberty, the British human rights group, was already a member). The decision, by unanimous resolution of the FIDH congress in Johannesburg, recognises the extraordinary efforts of the small staff team, members and allies in promoting human rights in Northern Ireland.
CAJ extends congratulations to FLAC on also becoming a full member of FIDH today.
CAJ participated in the FIDH Forum and Congress held in Johannesburg this week. The Forum had as its agenda ‘Fighting back for human rights: Enabling a vision, implementing a strategy and ensuring the space for civil society as the cornerstone of human development.’
The FIDH Congress was dedicated to all human rights defenders detained solely for their activities, including Nabeel Rajab, FIDH Deputy Secretary General (Bahrain), Abdolfattah Soltani (Iran), Razan Zeitouneh (Syria) to mention just a few.
