Can Stormont Rollback the Home Office ‘Hostile Environment’? Legal Research Report Launch
Join us for the launch of a new legal research paper by barrister Mark Bassett on the application of the ‘hostile environment’ in NI.
When: 10.30am to 12.30pm, Wednesday 23 February 2022
Where: Zoom (online only)
Commissioned by the Committee on the Administration of Justice (CAJ) Immigration Project, barrister Mark Bassett has authored a legal research paper mapping out the interface between devolved and non-devolved matters in respect of immigration and associated issues. This report examines where Northern Ireland Executive departments would have the legislative competence to push back against the hostile environment, as well as similar Home Office policies that have a detrimental impact on migrant rights. Against the backdrop of the Immigration Project’s interventions to counter the hostile environment in Northern Ireland, this report seeks to provide a blueprint for the future. The launch of Can Stormont Rollback the Home Office ‘Hostile Environment’? will be led by Mark Bassett BL, who will present the headline findings from his report.
Agenda:
Introduction from CAJ Immigration Project Solicitor and Coordinator, Úna Boyd.
Panel discussion on the impact of the hostile environment with Maria McCloskey (Children’s Law Centre) and Lilian Seenoi-Barr (North West Migrants Forum). Additional panellists tbc.
