Time: 12.30am to 4pm
Event Type: Hybrid Event
Event Venue: UNISON, Belfast, OR online

Context:
We live in an increasingly digital world, where vast parts of our lives now play out online. We can share photos of our meals and activities with our followers on social media, meet with colleagues on Zoom, and purchase whatever we need from online stores. But how well do we understand our rights when it comes to using digital platforms?  This Equality Coalition seminar will look at how human rights are developing in this digital era and explain how we can protect our data, and our privacy, while accessing online services.

The seminar will include a keynote presentation from Dr Johnny Ryan, Senior Fellow at the Irish Council of Civil Liberties (ICCL), who has testified before the United States Senate and EU institutions, and is currently litigating against the tech industry in Germany, Belgium, Ireland, and Northern California.

There will also be a panel discussion on ‘Digital Rights’, featuring Les Allamby (NIACRO), Lucie Audibert (Privacy International), Naomi Connor (Alliance for Choice), Dessie Donnelly (Rabble Cooperative), and Imogen Richmond-Bishop (Amnesty International).

Agenda:

  1. Introduction and context – Equality Coalition Co-Conveners, Patricia McKeown, Regional Secretary, UNISON, and Daniel Holder, Director, CAJ
  2. Presentation on ‘Big Tech. Even bigger problems’ – Dr Johnny Ryan, Senior Fellow, ICCL
  3. Q&A session
  4. Panel discussion on digital rights – Patricia McKeown, Regional Secretary, UNISON (Panel Chair); Les Allamby, Chair, NIACRO; Lucie Audibert, Lawyer and Legal Officer, Privacy International; Naomi Connor, Co-Convener, Alliance for Choice; Dessie Donnelly, Director, Rabble Cooperative; and Imogen Richmond-Bishop, ESCR and Tech Researcher/Advisor, Amnesty International
