Event video: Impunity and the NI legacy bill – 50 years on from the Pinochet coup
October 4, 2023Our recent seminar, ‘Impunity and the NI legacy bill – 50 years on from the Pinochet coup’, is now available to view online. Featuring input from international experts, this hybrid seminar looked at impunity both in the international context and specifically in relation to the controversial Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Bill, which has since passed into UK law.
The event took place on 11 September 2023, the fiftieth anniversary of the 1973 coup in Chile, which installed the dictatorship of General Pinochet. Pinochet’s brutal regime strove to provide impunity for human rights violations, including through bringing in the 1978 Amnesty Act.

Hosted at Queen’s University Belfast (QUB), the seminar was organised with CAJ, the Pat Finucane Centre (PFC), and the International Expert Panel on Impunity and the Northern Ireland Conflict.
