Submission to the UN Committee on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) on the UK’s 8th Periodic Report
Periodically, the UK is reviewed for its compliance with the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), which it ratified in 1986. Through ratifying the treaty, the UK committed itself to taking action to end discrimination against women.
The eighth periodic review of the UK is currently in progress. On 26 February, the UK will undergo a state examination at the UN headquarters in Geneva.
CAJ has made a formal submission to the CEDAW Committee in advance of this session. We highlight three different areas related to Northern Ireland on which we would like to see the UK questioned.
These are:
- Abortion legislation in Northern Ireland: competency of UK Parliament.
- Countering Incitement to Hatred on the grounds of gender.
- Women’s full and equal participation in public and political life – the gender related impact of the Northern Ireland conflict.
